This project, in collaboration with two Indian institutions, one in the north (South East Asia Institute for Thalassemia (SEA IT) at Manav Sewa Sangh Prem Niketan Hospital, Jaipur, Rajasthan) and one in the south (Nivethan Trust, Madurai, Tamil Nadu).
In Jaipur (SEA IT) bone marrow transplantation (BMT) has started in February 2012. This is the first BMT unit in Rajasthan, a state with 60 million people and several thousand children with thalassemia major and other diseases curable by BMT.
The first three transplanted children, Aditya, Naman and Aratrika, are doing well and not receiving transfusions for over 3 weeks.
In Madurai, at the Ceyrac Medical Foundation Hospital, a resource center equipped with a hematology counter and a restricted area for admission of immunosuppressed children has been developed.
